Haniyeh says Hamas is eager reach agreement to 'bring calm' to Israel as Fatah urges US policy reversals

Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh said Friday that his organization wants to “reach an understanding that will bring calm to Israel.”

The Gaza Strip leader claimed that Hamas hopes to reach an agreement with international and regional elements, such as Qatar, the United Nations, and thereby bypass Mahmoud Abbas in return for the lifting of the siege on the coastal enclave.

Rumors have been circulating recently that an a multilateral agreement between Hamas and various elements in the region, including Israel, Egypt, and Qatar, is currently in progress.

Haniyeh announced that in exchange for the terrorist group agreeing to a truce and an end to the weekly violent protests and confrontations on the Israel-Gaza border, Hamas would demand the lifting of the Israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip.

Haniyeh seeks to use the proposed deal to exclude Abbas, thus removing any potential role of  the Palestinian Authority in Gaza.

Meanwhile, Hamas’s rival Fatah, which governs the West Bank, also spoke out on Friday on their hopes for improved international cooperation. Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyadh Maliki said Friday that  the Palestinian Authority is willing to re-engage ties with the US administration if it “retreats” from recent steps.

Maliki claims that the US administration is implementing Donald Trump’s “deal of the century” without officially declaring it is doing so.

The steps Maliki refers to includerecognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and transferring the US embassy,closing the PLO office in Washington, andcutting off aid to UNRWA.

The minister insisted that the U.S.  needs to realize that the PA is not a “banana republic” and that the friction between the PA and Hamas arises from the their view Hamas is not a “sincere” entity.

In his remarks, Maliki pushed the U.S. to retreat from its recent policies and states that the Palestinians were forced to confront US actions with a boycott, because “the Palestinians had no other way to deal with the Americans.”
