I'm Ashamed to be called A Nigerian, Am Not A Nigerian — Femi Kuti Cries Out



“I am not a Nigerian, I am an African”, said the eldest son of Fela Kuti the afrobeat pioneer, Olufela Olufemi Anikulapo Kuti, popularly known as Femi Kuti.


According to Afrika Shrine, Femi Kuti distanced self from being a Nigerian, saying Nigeria is a colonial structure set in motion by Lord Lugard.

“I am not a Nigerian, I am an African. When you understand the history of Nigeria, Nigeria is a colonial structure set in motion by Lord Lugard and named after a “river” by  his wife flora-shore, So Nigeria is not our original name.”

Understanding The History Of Africa

Speaking further, Femi said “When you understand the history of Africa, then you will not be foolish again to fall into the category of calling yourself a Nigerian.”

“I am an African, because I understand that Africa was divided 1885.”

“When you look at it from that perspective, you will understand that people appreciate the talents that come out from this part of the world,” Femi Kuti said.
