The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has taken the National Assembly to court, requesting that the country's ongoing constitutional reform be halted immediately.
The suit was filed by the group's leadership, Nastura Ashir Shariff, Balarabe Rufa'i, Abdul-Aziz Sulaiman, and Aminu Adam, against the defendants: Attorney-General of the Federation Abubakar Malami; Senate President Ahmad Lawan; Speaker of the House of Representatives Femi Gbajabiamila; and the National Assembly, according to Daily Trust.
Abdul-Aziz Sulaiman, the coalition's spokesman, told reporters in Abuja that instead of the ongoing constitutional review, the defendants should create a framework for the realization of the agitators' demand for self-determination right now.
On June 11, the Coalition urged the National Assembly to put the constitution review on hold so that the government may hold a referendum on the establishment of a Biafra Republic.
It also asked the National Assembly to use the theory of necessity to hold a referendum on Biafra as the final step toward the Igbo's independence from the rest of Nigeria.
The group said that the relentless disruptions in the South-East, in the form of the agitation for a separate State of Biafra, had devolved into violence.
It urged the government to invite the United Nations (UN), African Union (AU), and Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to begin the process of self-determination that will force Biafrans out of Nigeria's union, citing several relevant international treaties and conventions to which Nigeria is a signatory.
