Yoruba Summit Group: Nigeria is an abomination, we have had enough, fumes over killing of Fasoranti’s by killer herdsmen
The Yoruba Summit Group, the umbrella body of all Yoruba groups, have condemned the killing of Funke Olakunrin in Ore, Ondo state by suspected killer herdsmen.
The deceased is the daughter of Chief Reuben Fasoranti, a prominent leader in the foremost Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere.
In a statement sent to journalists on Saturday, July 13 by its publicity secretary, Mogaji Gboyega Adejumo, the group said the Nigerian nation has failed the Yoruba race.
Part of the statement read: “At this juncture, the Yorùbá Summit Group, the umbrella body of all Yoruba groups, will have to say to the whole Yoruba nation that we have just about had enough of this evil union that has failed the 60 million strong Yoruba people, yet again.
“To therefore be bashed, buffeted with such a gruesome death in the heart of the Yoruba nation, will not be allowed to happen without profound and fundamental consequences!
“This is where the Yoruba cross the border into angry town, and not even for the time being.” The group stated that there will be a more comprehensive and definitive statement coming forth to the Yoruba nation from the Yoruba Summit Group, in due course.
“And to the enablers, prevaricators, protectors of the itinerant murdering Fulani herdsmen, a plea – leave us to mourn and bury our dead.
“None such fake condolences are needed at this time,” the statement concluded.
Fasoranti’s daughter killing: Don’t blame us when we fight back – Gani Adams
Gani Adams, aare onakakanfo of Yorubaland, says the Yoruba ethnic group should not be blamed if it decides to react to the killings in the region.
He was reacting to the killing of Funke Olakunrin, the daughter of Reuben Fasoranti, leader of Afenifere, a pan-Yoruba socio-cultural group.
She was shot dead by armed men along Benin-Ore road on Friday afternoon. Yinka Odumakin, spokesman of Afenifere, attributed the incident to herdsmen but TheCable could not independentlyverify his claim.
In a statement by Kehinde Aderemi, Adam’s media aide, said the Yoruba race was not short of ideas needed to put an end to atrocities in the region.
Adams, who is the leader of Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC), described the death of Olakunrin as aninvasion of the peaceful atmosphere of the south-west region.
“We only want the whole world to know what has been done and being done to our people. They should be aware of the actions that preceded our reaction when it eventually comes,” he said.
“We are not bereft of ideas of how to stop this criminality on our land. It is just so that we should not be blamed when the reaction comes.
“We are like the proverbial goat that it being chased. When it gets to the wall, it will certainly react. We are at that stage now.”
He commiserated with Fasoranti, praying God to comfort him and his entire household.
“Papa, this is a very trying time, but it is certain justice will come,” he said.
The youth wing of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, had reacted to the killing, saying it could spark another “tribal war”.
Jalingo Youths confiscates 62 cows from armed herdsmen who invaded village
Some youths in Kona community, a suburb of Jalingo in Taraba State, in the early hours of Thursday confiscated 62 cows from some armed herdsmen who invaded Kona village.
Mr Innocent Shaukani, leader of the Kona youths who confiscated the cows told our correspondent that the invaders fired shorts in the air to scare residents of the village.
Shaukani, a farmer, said that it took courage and grace of God for them to evade bullets from the three herdsmen who invaded their community in the morning.
He also said that the herdsmen destroyed plenty of crops on their farms, insisting that the invaders must pay compensation for their destruction.
“We heard gunshots early this morning at 4.30 am and came out to see what was happening, and we discovered that three herdsmen with cows had taken over our farms. It was still dark so they couldn’t target an individual but they shot sporadically.
“On our part, we were many chasing them; and they might have felt we carried arms so they ran away leaving 62 cows which are under police custody now. We want whoever that owns those cows to pay compensation to those whose crops had been destroyed,” he said.
When our correspondent visited the village the 62 confiscated cows were confined in an uncomplicated building under the watch of some policemen and youths in Kona village.
The Chief of Kona, Kuru Augustine Njenmang, who confirmed the incident said that he made contact with the police to make sure that the authorities were involved and the law was allowed to take its course.
Njenmang called on the security agencies to ensure that the owner of the herds paid compensation for the crops they destroyed before the cows would be released to them.
According to him, “we are a peace-loving people and will not allow our youths to take the laws into their hands, that is why I am appealing to the government to ensure that herdsmen do not graze in villages they had burnt before so as to prevent unnecessary provocations.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP David Misal, also confirmed the incident and said that the police had commenced investigation into the matter and would ensure that the needful was done.
Recall that some Kona communities in Jalingo recently came under heavy attacks by armed herdsmen killing several persons and burning houses.
BY MARTINS FREDERICK; The Igbos all along Knew what the Fulani stand for
“Today I will be frank and brutally truthful!
The Igbos all along knew what the Fulani stand for, they led a revolution of southern Nigerians that cut the Fulani Agenda to size, and, though it was not a tribal revolution, it became an Igbo coup. Yoruba leaders led Yoruba to the Fulani party as guests not as celebrants.
Fast forward…yet with the Fulani owning the Federal Government…Yoruba were only too happy to be a part of it…yet, we saw great men like Abiola, Fela, Beko Ransome Kuti, Falana, Gani Fawehinmi and a host of others maltreated and jailed…even Awolowo…was wrongly sent to jail by the northern powers..for which a Yoruba judge claimed his hands were tied!
And, one has to ask: “what is it that Yoruba see in Fulani that other southern brothers and sisters do not see ?”
Look how this lovely responsible daughter of a responsible gentleman, elder and leader of Afenifere and therefore southern leader has been mowed down by people not wothy of cleaning her shoes…so painful.
I doff my hat for FFK because he saw something others refused to see during the formation of APC and he said it, that APC is Fulani and he bolted away from APC.
He became scorned by the Yoruba and nothing he said was important. Alas! The stone that the builders rejected has become the head cornerstone!
Ojukwu instilled fear into the Fulani and that fear is still there even when Ojukwu has passed on. Because, there are those who can do what Ojukwu did, if not better.
I pray that the south can stand arm in arm to overcome the Fulani trouble.”
