Xenophobic attacks which affected Nigerians in South Africa will not be discussed at the UNGA —Geoffrey Onyeama
Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, has said the xenophobic attacks which affected Nigerians in South Africa will not be discussed at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
Mr Onyeama said the UNGA is not a forum to take issue of the crises that just happened in South Africa, because the affected countries have the capacity to settle it within themselves.
The minister was speaking during a pre-UNGA press briefing on Tuesday in New York.
“We have not gotten to that stage. Rather, it is something that can be sorted out amongst ourselves,” the minister said.
He also added that President Muhammadu Buhari will be going to South Africa in October where a binational commission between South Africa and Nigeria will be formed at the levels of heads of state.
Concerning UNGA, the minister disclosed the overarching theme for the 74th UNGA as ‘Galvanising Multilateral Efforts for Poverty Eradication, Quality Education, Climate Action and Inclusion.
Mr Onyeama said “the theme captures four areas that also resonate with us as a country.
President Buhari will be the 5th head of state to issue his national statement at the assembly.
