The United States government has urged African countries to speak out against Russia's invasion of Ukraine, an advice that experts say is unhealthy as Africa already faces serious internal challenges.
Molly Phee, Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, who spoke with an African journalist, said Ukraine needed Africa's support, saying it is important.
“The United States believes strongly that African voices matter in the international community, that your voices matter in the global conversation,” said Phee, according to VOA.
The US official added that, “We believe that it is critical at this moment in time that the entire international community demonstrates unity and speaks with one voice against this aggression and in support of principles, timeless principles. These include sovereignty, territorial integrity, peaceful resolution of disputes, and protection of civilians”.
Nigeria and 140 countries had voted against Russia at the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday, but many African countries and others abstained in the vote.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has promised a complete ceasefire if Ukraine drops its NATO bid, accepts the Kremlin's demand for its "demilitarization" and declare itself neutral.
