Trump under fire for asking black congresswomen to go back; to their countries

United States President Donald Trump earned the anger of many American elites following his ‘racist’ tweet asking some black congresswomen to leave the United States instead of attacking his policies.

In a series of tweets shared on Sunday, Trump subtly targeted freshmen Democratic Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib, Ayanna Pressley and Ilhan Omar. He wrote that the representatives — three of whom were born in the U.S., and all American citizens — should “go back and help fix the totally broken and crime-infested places from which they came.”

“So interesting to see ‘Progressive’ Democrat Congresswomen, who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe, the worst, most corrupt and inept anywhere in the world (if they even have a functioning government at all), now loudly … and viciously telling the people of the United States, the greatest and most powerful Nation on earth, how our government is to be run.”

“Why don’t they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came. Then come back and show us how … it is done. These places need your help badly, you can’t leave fast enough. I’m sure that Nancy Pelosi would be very happy to quickly work out free travel arrangements!”

Trump’s remarks came after a Friday testimony of Ms Ocasio-Cortez, Ms Tlaib and Ms Pressley before a House committee on the conditions in a migrant detention centre, noting that the immigrants are being held in inhumane conditions.

But instead of apologising, while addressing a press conference on Monday, the US President insisted that, “It doesn’t concern me because many people agree with me. And all I’m saying, they want to leave, they can leave.”

“If you’re not happy in the U.S., if you’re complaining all the time, very simply, you can leave. You can leave right now. Come back if you want, don’t come back, it’s OK too. But if you’re not happy, you can leave,” he said.

Trump has since been under intense criticism from the media and politicians, especially members of the Democratic Party.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has also announced that the House will vote on a resolution to condemn the president’s statement about her colleagues.
